The password check uses k-anonymity. Your password is hashed with SHA-1 in your browser, and only the first 5 characters of that hash are ever sent. The service returns every leaked hash sharing those 5 characters, and the match happens locally. We never see your password, and neither does anyone else.
Where the data comes from
The password check matches against Have I Been Pwned's Pwned Passwords – 800M+ exposed passwords, queried with k-anonymity so your password never leaves your device. The email check uses XposedOrNot, an open breach database that aggregates billions of accounts from thousands of verified breaches, including infostealer logs.
